Brad Westwood is a retired archivist, museum curator and public historian. He was formerly senior public historian for Utah, the director of the Utah State Historical Society and Utah's SHPO (State Historic Preservation Officer) from 2013 to 2023. He was also the manager of acquisitions for the LDS Church History Department from 2008 to 2013. From 1995 to 2008 he was an archivist, then assistant department chair, then chair of the L. Tom Perry Special Collections at BYU. While at BYU, Brad originated and served as cofounder—with Scott Duvall, another former department chair—of this conference, some twenty years ago.
Brad's Luncheon remarks are titled "The Early Tumultuous Years of Brigham Young University". He will speak on the early years of Brigham Young University, circa 1875 to 1920s, regarding the school’s and Utah Territory’s misunderstood social, political and educational backgrounds swirling around the school’s precarious beginnings.
He will also speak on architect Joseph Don Carlos Young’s and academy principal Karl Maeser’s architectural design and prototype, for the church’s academy buildings, as expressed in the 1884 design (completed 1891) of the Brigham Young Academy building. He will also be throwing out a few rare book references to match the theme of the conference.
